Lena became a public servant in large part because of her frustration with our nation’s justice system. The disparate treatment of African-Americans, who often find they are dealing with weighted scales of justice, remains a driving force in her commitment to social change. Lena took on the difficult issue of officer-involved deaths, ultimately serving as the lead Senate author of Wisconsin’s new first in the nation law that requires an independent investigation in the instance of an officer-involved death. Law enforcement officers are the front line of our justice system. Their heroic actions often help ensure our community is kept safe. However, that kind of power requires trust and oversight. This law will instill greater trust within the community that officers are acting within the level of the law and the scope of their responsibilities to protect and serve.
